The Tradition of Christmas in Tenerife

Tenerife1

If the thought of Christmas on the beach just doesn’t sound right,

or the idea of Santa in flip flops seems crazy,

you should rethink ….

 book a flight ….

Tenerife is perfect to celebrate the festive season,
and what more would you expect from an island
topped with Fir Trees and a Snowy Mountain?

With average December temperatures
hitting between
16ºC (61ºF) and
24ºC (75ºF)
you really shouldn’t have
to think about it for too long.

Over the years the various of Cultures and Religions in Tenerife have made their mark, and led to a mixture of new traditions.

Stylish Christmas Trees, lights and decorations can be found across the island, and give a wonderfully festive feel to the areas.

As well as the more modern traditions, Tenerife holds true to some of the more traditional followings.

The Nativity

Tenerife has many deeply routed traditions, and non so much as The Nativity.

You will find a mixture of traditional Christmas Decor wherever you go, and Christmas Trees galore, but one of  Tenerife’s most deeply routed tradition is  The Nativity. As well as in peoples houses, you will find Nativity displays in bars, restaurants, shops, parks, even in the centre of roundabouts. And most towns will have stunning exhibitions representing the local tradition and culture.

The 3 Kings

Every year on 5th January the 3 Kings of the Orient; Melchior, Gaspar & Balthasar,  parade around the cities on camels …. or floats.

In some areas, Adeje for example, they even arrive by helicopter, greeted by hundreds of adoring children waiting to receive gifts, sweets and blessings for the forthcoming year!

Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair

The annual Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair is organised by the Canarian Authorities, and alternates between the islands. 2019 will be hosted by Tenerife from 4th December to 8th December, in the Recinto Ferial, Santa Cruz.

With a vast range of traditional products on offer, 150 stalls offer food and drink, hand crafted leather, pottery, woodwork, as well as jewellery, lacework, and much more. A great day out to hunt for Christmas gifts.
